Having Superpowers Doesn't Make A Superhero

An article published in The Guardian analyzes the cooperation between the United States and China during climate change-fueled disasters at the beginning of August 2022. China halted its cooperation with the United States in response to Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, and it has raised a significant amount of concern among climate diplomats. The United States and China are the world’s two largest carbon emitters, producing about 40% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. Their collaboration is crucial for addressing climate change.

At the 2021 COP26 the United States and China made progress by agreeing to work together to reduce emissions. Having two superpowers agree to go forth in making changes for the progression of lowering emissions inspired other countries to do the same. This adds significance to the situation. It is important to emphasize the influence of these two countries when they come to an agreement to work on a global conflict together.

Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation, highlighted that climate impacts cannot be frozen despite diplomatic tensions. And it’s true. There should be an emphasis on these two countries to put their self-interests aside and come together to address climate change.

It’s sad to think that countries with so much power and influence would much rather protect their self-image and keep comfortable as the world burns with them. It’s no secret that no one will be safe from the devastating long-term effects climate change will have on Earth. Soon enough reality will hit us all and it will be too late to try and achieve power in a world that burns.

Regardless, the author of the article, Oliver Milman, is positive that there will still be progress at the COP27 conference. He emphasizes that there should be a backup plan if the United States and China fail to fix their differences in time.

To even have to consider having a backup plan because two super countries will not place their differences to the side for the common good is shameful.

  1. climate change is a huge issue in the world right now and it would be nice if everyone felt the same. to know that the two powers of the world are at odds and cannot in your words "place their differences to the side for the common good is shameful" is such an accurate statement. with all the new technology advances that have been produced to help the world and the present harm that could be done to the world (climate change) in real time should be more than enough to convince these two powers that something drastically different should happen within their relationship and for the sake of the world, but it's going to take more than optimism to fix this issue.

  2. Climate change is a world issue that is often being neglected. The world is constantly evolving yet countries are still limiting their actions on climate change based on their political agendas. Do you think Climate Change is political since its a world issue? I do, I wish it was as simple as everyone working together to exhibit change but i'm starting to see that all world change is political motiviated.
